Confined Space
A confined space entry training is a course based on OSHA’s permit-required confirmed space standards for general industry or construction. The federal agency introduced the standards to help employees work safely in confined spaces. Training topics also include how to identify potential hazards in a confined space and overcome them. There are also fewer comprehensive trainings available to teach you how to identify permit-required confined spaces rather than work in them.
According to OSHA, a confined space has the following three characteristics:
- The space is large enough for employees to fully enter to perform their duties. This means that the employee can fit entirely inside the space.
- The space has limited or restricted means for entry or exit. Examples of limited means of entry include trip hazards, slippery floors, poor illumination and ladders. This does not mean that the space only has one way in or out.
- The space is not designed for continuous occupancy. For example, a functioning submarine is not a confined space because it does not meet this criterion. However, spaces such as most manholes and tanks are not designed for continuous worker occupancy.
Examples of confined spaces include underground vaults, pits and diked areas, storage bins, silos, vessels and more.
Who needs confined space training?
Confined space training is recommended for all employees involved in confined space entry work, including:
- Workers who have to enter or work in a confined space
- Employees who work in permit-required confined spaces
- Attendants of confined and permit-required confined spaces
- Employees who work in pits, pipes, silos, sumps and tanks
